Northern Aberdares Tarns & Waterfalls: 22nd July 2017
A.ABOUT Northern Moorlands
• Difficulty: High to Very High
• Altitude: 3794AMSL
• Trekking Time: 9 hours
The Northern moorlands of the Aberdares have long been accessed from the Shamata gate in Nyandarua. However, with our recent efforts we bring you this exciting trail with an easy access just off corridor between Mt. Kipipiri and the Aberdares ridge. The trail starts off on a steep ascent with abit of tree cover. The destruction by the surrounding communities is evident here.
The upper reaches lead on to beautiful craggy rock ridges before giving way to moorland famous for the bog or tussock grass. The ridge becomes gradual in the moorland zone. On the moorland is where these hidden Aberdare tarns or small lakes are found scattered over a small area. The trail then banks North towards table mountain with a quick descent on the western side. A detour to the waterfall is possible if the group is fast.
Aberdare is a vast wild area. Ensure you are properly geared.
Meet with our expedition crew at 0430hrs for the departure at 0440hrs. Travel to start point in Wanjohi- North Kinangop .Embark on the climb at 0900hrs.
The climb is a challenging walk up the long steep ridge. After reaching the tarns and the summit return via a separate route back to camp. If time allows, a detour to the falls would be rewarding. We enjoy late lunch before departing for the journey back to Nairobi arriving late in the evening.
