Hiking Up Dragon’s Teeth and Satima in the Northern Moorlands of the Aberdares

Ol Donyo Le  Satima popularly known as Mt. Satima is the 3rd largest mountain in Kenya standing at approximately 4000m ASL is the immediate neighbor to a number of sharp volcanic cones called “the Dragon’s Teeth”. Dragon’s Teeth is a sporadic spread of jagged rocks that rise above the consistently wet moorlands in Northern Aberdares. Join us as we take on this scenic hike on the Moorland.

Itinerary Summary

Meet for an early morning departure. We drive north from Nairobi and a few kilometers after Nyeri, branch off toward the mountains. The drive up the mountain is slow but scenic as the tropical rainforest gives way to the moorland vegetation. Ascend 12km in the mountain to reach an altitude of 3450m at the Twin peaks point.  From here you can see the nearby Chebuswa peaks. The hike starts here with some of the most beautiful rock formations in Kenya. They include the Lost Pyramid, Muirs Massive, Weathering Heights, Devil’s Sword, Theater of Heaven, and finally the Dragons Teeth with stunning rock formations. After a short rest Bank east towards the high ridges and head towards Satima peak to arrive late in the afternoon. Descend back to the starting point and drive back to Nairobi

What to Carry

1. Comfortable hiking boots
2. Long Pants and Long sleeved top/light jacket recommended
3. Plenty of drinking water 2-3 litres
4. Sunhat, Sunscreen, Sunglasses
5. Any personal medication
6. Day Pack /Small Bag to carry your personal items
7. Snacks, Fruits, Drinks to last the hike
8. Rain Gear in case it rains
9. An identification card or passport
