Lamu Tamu Experience

Tick off Lamu from your Bucketlist

The Lamu Archipelago is on the Indian Ocean close to the Northern coast of Kenya. The group of islands lies between the towns of Lamu and Kiunga in Lamu County. The largest islands are Pate, Manda, and Lamu. The smaller ones include Kiwayu and Manda Toto. Lamu town the base of our trip is on the world heritage list and for good reason.
On the island are several archaeological/historical sites including Takwa and Manda Town. Shanga is another of great importance. LAMU is a place whose history is mysterious and fascinating. There are endless beaches, medieval old stone towns, and tiny villages in coconut and mango plantations. The Town dates back to as far as the 12th century and speaks to the heart and soul!

A. Expedition Itinerary

Day 1: Fly from Nairobi to Manda Airport
Touch down at the Manda Airport. Take a boat from the airport to the hotel of your choice in Lamu or Shela. If in Lamu Town you will have dinner at restaurants near your accommodation or order inhouse.
After dinner, you may rest or head out to the Floating Bar. A wooden pontoon supported by 250 plastic drums and floating in the channel between Lamu Town and Shela. You may also choose to have dinner there also.

Day 2: Explore Takwa Ruins & Shela Beach
On this day you can choose to relax or take our Lamu Bucketlist Bundle. On the bundle, we get to explore the islands. The charm of the island is its natural beauty. Endless coral atolls, mangrove forests, remote archipelagos, and secluded lagoons dot the landscape. The white sandy beaches breathtaking to say the least.
A highlight for today is Takwa ruins. These are secluded remains of civilization between the 14th and 16th centuries. The site is accessible from 9-11 am depending on the tide.
After this tour sail down to Shela beach for a relaxing chill afternoon. The beach is also a good place to enjoy your lunch.
In the evening choose between rest, a nearby joint, or the floating bar for some fun night.
Day 3: Sail away to Kipungani Island
Regarded as a highlight, this is the most recommended activity on our Lamu Bucketlist. After breakfast, pack your day pack and board a dhow.
Sit back and enjoy a full-day exploration of Kipungani island. This is the day that you take over a private beach alone. Seafood lunch will be served by the shores. On the way back enjoy a sunset cruise.
Day 4: Fly Back to Nairobi
After breakfast, you may have some town tour and a donkey ride on the beach before taking a boat to the Airport. Fly back to Nairobi at noon.
