Adventure Hike to Mt. Kenya Via Narumoru

CONQUER MT. KENYA VIA NAROMORU

This is one of the most popular route up Mt. Kenya. It offers the easiest and fastest ascent up to Point Lenana .Take this classic route up Mount Kenya through the notoriously treacherous vertical bog and into the wide Teleki Valley beneath the Tryndall and the Lewis Glacier.   The Mt. Kenya summit is easily reachable in the 4 days itinerary offered below.

Itinerary

Day 1: Nairobi – Naromoru Gate -Meteorological Station 3-4 hrs, 10km, 400m ascent

Transfer to Naromoru Park Gate early in the Morning from Nairobi. Check in at the gate and register with KWS offices. The hike starts at 2600m from the gate on a recently renovated road track which follows the crest of a board ridge between the Northern and Southern Naromoru valleys. This is relatively an easy gradual climb with some steep sections. The trek ends at Met station 3,000m for dinner and overnight rest in shared mountain huts.

Day 2: Met Station-Mackinders Camp 5-6 hrs, 10km, 1200m ascent

Head uphill on the track to pass the radio mast on your right a short distance from the camp. The trek runs into a path and after another 30 minutes, you will reach the end of the forest belt and enter the moorland. This is the vertical bog conditions range from damp to glutinous depending on when it last rained.
The ascent becomes gradual towards the end where you reach a fork overlooking Teleki Valley where you follow a stream to reach Mackinders Camp at 4,200m. Dinner and overnight at Mackinders Camp.

Day 3: Mackinders Camp-Austrian Hut 4-5 hrs, 5km, 695m ascent

To increase our chances of summit and avoid a late night summit, embark on a day climb to Austrian Hut leaving after 10am. The route approaches the peaks from the South. This is the steepest section of the hike and doing it in the day gives you better weather than the cold nights. Arrive at Austrian Hut for the night.

Day 4: Austrian Hut to Lenana Peak – Old Moses – Nairobi, 2hrs ascent and 6 hours decent, 25km, 200m Ascent

Wake up at 0400hrs and enjoy some hot tea and light snacks before departing for the summit ridge. From this vantage it takes you about 2 hours of scramble to reach the summit of Lenana at Sunrise. Take photos and enjoy the views of Batian and Point John to the west before descending via Sirimon route to Shiptons Camp for brunch. After brunch head down to Old Moses from where you will be picked up from there by car to Nairobi for Rest and recovery.
