Hike Summary

Ol Donyo Orok, also known as Namanga Hill, soars to an elevation of 2,548m above sea level. The name Ol Donyo Orok means the Black Mountain to the local Maasai community that resides around it. The hill is an outstanding massive next to the Tanzania Border and offers a great day hike out of Nairobi. The hill has a natural forest with largely unexploited vegetation, which gets thicker as the trail winds its way higher up the mountain along the Namanga River. At some places higher up, the trail opens up into clearings from where views of the town below, the distant Mt Longido, and Mt Kilimanjaro are a sight to behold.

At a glance

The trail starts in a town near the Namanga River and snakes steeply up the slope to the first vantage or false summit with an amazing view of the town.
From here the hike gets into a deep forest and the distance is determined by how fit the group is. The thick forest is a surprise in the dry surroundings with beautiful plants all the way.
