CROSSING MT. KENYA OFF YOUR BUCKET LIST

Chogoria to Sirimon is the most scenic transverse of the Mt Kenya routes. For the visitor hoping to see more and not just hike, this is the perfect combination with multiple high altitude lakes, forest vegetation, and waterfalls to behold. Accommodation is available in camping arrangements while on the trip with mountain huts available at the last hut.

Day 1: Nairobi/Chogoria/Mount Meru Bandas/Lake Ellis (3600mts) – 4 hour Drive, 3hrs walk, 9km walk, 700m ascent
Pick up from Nairobi at 0530hrs and drive north to Chogoria town. Drive on to the park gate and onwards to Chogoria Bandas for the start of the hike. Enjoy picnic lunch at Chogoria Bandas and thereafter, hike 9km of the scenic landscape to reach Lake Ellis, a tranquil area for camping and Dinner. Dinner and overnight in tents on 2 sharing(Communicate to our team for a single tent option).
Day 2: Lake Ellis to Lake Michaelson (3,900m) – 6 hours of walking
After breakfast, you will follow the trail as it leads up through glades of montane forest climbing away from Lake Ellis on its west side, across moorland to a ridge that eventually joins the main Chogoria trail. Enjoy a picnic lunch with hot soup on the beautiful moorland valley. Beautiful views of Vivienne Falls and the Gorges Valley on the descent to the picturesque campsite next to Lake Michaelson. Dinner and overnight at Lake Michaelson one of the most beautiful high altitude lakes in the whole country.
Day 3: Lake Michaelson /Mintos Hut(4300mts) – Simba Tarn (4,630m) 500m ascent
After breakfast embark on the walk up from the lake Michaelson crater to round the cliffs and come out at Mintos Hut. Once you get to Minto’s hut visit the adjacent Hall Tarns. A short 5-minute walk to the side of these Tarns is a sheer cliff drop called The Temple, with a stunning view of Lake Michaelson directly below. Proceed onwards to circumnavigate the peaks around the mountain to end up at Austrian Hut. 4790m above sea level. This hut is at a vantage point with the peaks so close by and hosts the highest toilet in Africa. The walk to the summit from here will be a short and almost guaranteed approach. Dinner and overnight at Austrian Hut.
Day 4: Simba Tarn (4,630m)– Lenana Peak(4,895m) – Old Moses – Nairobi
Start early at 0430hrs and walk up the rope lined steep path to the summit. The screen is loose here and caution is advised. It is beautiful to see the crack of dawn and the sunrise from the Eastern side of the Chogoria route. The last section to the summit goes via A Via Ferrata – the highest in the world. A via Ferrata is a protected and usually safe climbing route where ropes have been used to make it easy for new climbers. Upon arriving at the summit take photos and enjoy briefly before starting back down. After enjoying the summit, descend west via the Sirimon route to enjoy breakfast at Shipton’s Camp. Later, descend Old Moses camp to arrive later in the afternoon. After a short rest, embark on your journey back to Nairobi to arrive in the evening.
