CROSSING MT. KENYA GLACIAL LAKES OFF YOUR BUCKET LIST
Mount Kenya is the second-highest peak in Africa and is home to several glacial lakes and tarns, hundreds of wildlife species, and indigenous plants. This remarkable hike offers an unforgettable experience of hiking through rugged terrain, lush valleys, and ancient glaciers that lead you to a series of stunning lakes by size and beauty, nestled in the heart of Mt Kenya.
Day 1: Nairobi to Mackinder’s Camp: 14th July
Begin the day with a transfer to Naromoru Park Gate early in the Morning from Nairobi. After gate clearance drive onward to Met station where the hike begins. Hike through the vertical bog towards the edge of the moorland and into the rocky desert of Mackinder’s camp. If time allows tour Teleki and Lewis Tarns.
Dinner and overnight stay at Mackinder’s Huts
Day 2: Hobley Valley: 15th July
Today we explore the Lake rich Hobley Valley.
Departing from Mackinder’s explore Lake Hohnel and Hidden Tarn which stands at an elevation of 4,398m. We also take a tour of the Thompson Tarns then follow the Valley down to Enchanted Lake and onwards to Carr Lakes which sits at an elevation of 3,958m above sea Level. Return to Mackinder’s for the second night.
Day 3: Mackinder’s to Shipton: 16th July
After breakfast, hike to Two Tarns, which is a beautiful pair of small lakes. Enjoy the scenic surrounding before continuing to Tyndall another picturesque lake. After a short rest head toward Nanyuki Tarn and Emerald Tarn at an elevation of 4,605m. Continue with your trek and make your way to Hausberg Col. This is a high mountain false summit pass that offers panoramic views of the peaks. Descend from Hausberg and reach Oblong Tarn and Kami Tarn. This scenic spot is surrounded by rugged cliffs and offers a peaceful ambiance. Leaving Kami Tarn behind we proceed to Shiptons Camp our home for the night.

Day 4: Shipton to Michaelson: 17th July
Start early in the morning from Shiptons Camp, located at an elevation of around 4,200 meters.Begin your hike by heading southeast from Shiptons Camp towards Lower Simba Tarn and continue towards Upper Simba Tarn. The trail gradually ascends, offering breathtaking views of the valleys and peaks of Mt Kenya. From Upper Simba Tarn, the trail descends through a rocky terrain to reach Harris Tarn situated at an elevation of 4,630m. Take a short break, enjoy the panoramic views, and replenish your energy.
After resting at Harris, continue your hike towards Lake Michaelson. The trail winds through beautiful valleys, offering glimpses of unique flora and fauna. After spending some time at Lake Michaelson, retrace your steps and head back towards Harris. From Harris, continue your descent towards Oldmoses Camp. The trail gradually descends, and you’ll enjoy scenic views as you make your way down.
Arrive at Old Mosses or onward transport to Nairobi to arrive in the evening.
PHYSICAL FITNESS
Due to the nature of the exercise, you need to prepare your body well. It is recommended you do daily cardio-based exercises before the hike. Pre hikes are organized every weekend and private on weekdays and it would be great to attend them. Contact the Bucketlist team for the calendar on this. We have prep hikes lined up every weekend for your support.
FOOD & SNACKS
Meals will be provided, as well as basic snacks like cookies, biscuits, and fruits. You should also bring your own energy snacks for the duration of the hike. Based on your preference, you can consider nuts, candy, energy bars, soda/beverage, Energy Sachets, Apples, and fruits. Main meals are prepared and served at camp. They include common starch, vegetables, soup, and meat. Any special dietary requirements such as diabetic, vegetarian, lactose intolerant, non-beef must be communicated in advance.
